Energy savings compared to equivalent luminaire without CLO

Luminaires with Constant Light Output (CLO) contribute to more optimised and sustainable facilities by reducing over-illumination. In turn, this means less installed output and it can, in some cases, even require fewer luminaires. The ultimate result is, of course, the energy saved – a benefit for both the environment and your finances.

With LEDs, the luminous flux decreases over time as the diodes are being used. This light depreciation is more or less linear across the diode’s service life. However, the luminaire itself can compensate for this loss using a programmable driver. This is known as Constant Light Output (CLO).

As energy prices increase, there is a great deal of focus on switching to more sustainable solutions. LED luminaires with lighting control is one of those – and it is an investment that brings immediate benefits.

High-quality LED lighting is energy-efficient, producing a lot of light in relation to the energy used. Compared to fluorescent luminaires, not only is the energy consumption significantly lower, but the lifetime of LED luminaries is longer as well. By adding CLO (Constant Light Output), your lighting solution can then be further optimised.​

Lighting solutions

Do you wonder why you can't tweak your own presence level in this example? It's all about the EN 15193-1 standard Energy performance of buildings – energy requirements for lighting. This standard takes a real-world approach, assuming an average occupancy of 75 %, calculated over 2000 hours per year, for a classroom.

Why then the 75 % number for presence? The default absence factor of 25 % considers for example lunch, other lessons like gymnastics, breaks, and those moments when your classroom is empty. The idea is to make your lighting as practical as your classroom life. So, while you can't change your presence level settings, it's all in the name of smarter, more efficient lighting that matches how your space is really used. Of course, different types of lighting control settings and individual presence levels in a specific project also affect the end result.

The energy consumed during operation contributes to the greatest environmental impact of luminaires. On the other hand, if you use lighting controls so the light is only turned on where people actually are located, you can save a great deal of energy - and use the earth’s resources more sustainably.

Smart lighting solutions of different types, matching many different needs, are an essential and constantly evolving part of Fagerhult’s product offer.

Organic Response is a wireless plug-and-play system developed for entire buildings. The sensors integrated into each luminaire are easily connected – and without commissioning or programming, you get a smart and energy-efficient lighting control system based on presence detection.

Our examples illustrate the amount of daylight equivalent to that of southern part of Sweden. These calculations take latitude into account, but not the direction of the windows. The amount of daylight is project specific and influenced by geographic position, the building's orientation, the size/type of windows, and other factors.

There are different ways to control the light. Here’s a brief summary.

When we create electric lighting we are inspired by daylight. The result is healthy indoor environments that influences the visual, biological and emotional effects of light. The biological and visual aspects of light also have the ability to affect our emotions. The minimum requirements of these visual and room-creating effects are clearly regulated today through the lighting standard and legal demands.

Human Centric Lighting, or HCL, is light that balances the visual, biological and emotional effects in humans. It requires tailor-made solutions that are based on the specific environment and needs of the people who live and work in it. It requires an approach that takes into account all aspects of the human relationship to light: the visual task as well as our physical, psychological and emotional needs.

Increased levels of light at the right time of day makes us more alert and less tired. A boost of light in the morning, for instance, raises your cortisol production and suppresses your melatonin, giving you a balanced energy level lasting the entire day and creating the base for a good night’s sleep. This can be measured by the melanopic lux level that reaches the eye.

The impact on climate change in our tool is related to your solution’s energy consumption. This means that the embodied carbon of the luminaires themselves is not considered in your recipe of light. The LENI (Lighting Energy Numeric Indicator) number that indicates energy use is calculated, and the result displayed is in accordance with its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.

The energy use has a direct influence on your overall lighting quality, but also on your electricity bill and the environmental impact. Increased lighting comfort and additional lighting experiences ​increase the use of energy – and so there needs to be a balance between what is good ​lighting for people and what is good lighting for the environment.

Our constant ambition is to offer premium solutions with value for money. A varied and dynamic lighting solution focuses on the well-being of the people being in an indoors environment. This naturally increases the luminaire investment, which includes the luminaires themselves, the controls, and the maintenance. Adding controls increases the initial investment, but over time, it also decreases the energy use and the environmental impact.​
